Indoor Fun: Creative Activities to Keep You Moving During the Cold Months

Baby, It’s Cold Outside–But You Can Still Stay Active!
When the temperatures plummet, it can be tempting to curl up in front of a roaring fire with a cup of hot chocolate. And while we understand the impulse, it’s important that you not spend the entire season on the couch.
However, we also understand that not everyone wants to brave the cold just to get some exercise. While winter activities like skiing, sledding, or snowshoeing are all great workouts, you can also get active without ever leaving your comfortable, toasty living room.
Today, we want to share five of our favorite winter activities. All of them are fun, physically active, and, best of all, entirely indoors.
1. Cozy Cardio
Forget hitting the gym. You can absolutely reap the benefits of cardiovascular exercise without braving the cold.
The key to making cardio “cozy” is to set up a cozy environment for exercise–and that’s easy in the middle of winter! Turn down the lights, light some candles, put on your comfiest sweatpants, and stream that show you’ve been meaning to watch. But instead of curling up on the couch, do some cardio: stroll on your treadmill, ride a stationary bike, or jump rope in your living room.
2. Holiday Dance Party
Dancing is one of those forms of exercise that doesn’t remotely feel like exercise, and having a dance party is a fun, active way to celebrate the holidays. Create a playlist of your favorite dance songs (holiday-themed or not), string up some multicolored lights or other festive decorations, and start grooving–alone or with friends.
3. Mall Walking
If you don’t mind driving over to a mall or big box store, this can be another great way to get some exercise and get out of the house. Don’t like crowds? Many malls will open their doors before the stores open, so you can enjoy some peace and quiet (and warmth) while exercising.
4. Interactive Video Games
These days, there are lots of video games centered around physical activity. If you have a more recent video game console, research some of the fitness games available for your system and invest in the ones that sound the most fun.
5. Yoga
Yoga is a great way to stay active in the chilly winter months. No matter your experience level, it’s easy to find follow-along Yoga videos online–including modified and beginner-friendly practices. You can also visit a local Yoga studio, which will be warm and cozy even in the winter months.
We hope this list can help you find fun, creative ways to stay active when it’s too cold to go outside. Spring will be here before you know it–and since you kept up your exercise this winter, you’ll be more than ready to enjoy the warmer weather!
